Knock, United Kingdom.
Knock is Ireland's National Marian Shrine. Today it is an internationally recognized place of Catholic pilgrimage.
On August 21, 1879, the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist appeared on the south gable of Knock Parish Church. The apparition was witnessed by 15 people, both young and old.
The personal pilgrimage of Pope John Paul II to Knock in 1979, commemorating the centenary of the apparition, inspired new interest and fervor as the shrine benefited from the Vaticanís public recognition.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited the Shrine in June of 1993. One and a half million pilgrims visit Knock annually.
